We’re (barely) on the charts!

Well, Matt has been asking for percentiles, but our babies weren’t on the charts which means they were the bottom 1% and 99% of babies were bigger than ours! Although it’s funny… people often either say, “they are so small!” or “they aren’t that small!” I guess it’s all in comparison to whichever babies you are used to being around. Our doctor announced that we are finally on the charts! Zach is in the 3%ile for height and the 11%ile for weight, so 89 babies out of 100 are bigger than him at 2 months. He’s doing a bang-up job of catching up though and now weighs 10 lb. 4 oz.! And I like that he’s little… that won’t be true very long! Rissa is almost the reverse… she is in the 12%ile for height and the 5%ile for weight. She weighs 8 lb. 12.75 oz. and is adorably-sized. I like how little she is too. He’ll start gaining height to match his weight and she’ll start gaining weight to match her height, and then they’ll switch again. It’s very cute… they DO work on growing into their cheeks! Of course, they are 10 weeks old, so their numbers and percentiles are slightly lower since they are being compared to babies 1.5 weeks younger than they are. Our tiny cuties are eating brilliantly and growing well. They got three shots each and were very brave. Mommy got a flu shot and now has little use of her right arm for the next day or two… ouch! Thankfully, having a super soft fuzzy blanket makes recovery possible!

We went to Children’s Hospital in St. Louis last Friday for Zach’s button and they do want to do surgery and they still want to wait until he is 6 months old. So… as we noticed yesterday and was confirmed by our pediatrician today, guess who else has a hernia? <sigh> I didn’t know they were contagious! 🙂  I wish we’d seen it a week sooner so they could have been checked out together. But we didn’t, so guess where we are headed back to? That’s right, St. Louis! This could become a 4 trip extravaganza, for two 20 minute consults and two 35 minute surgeries. Kyle, you are going to have to ride your bike on our behalf a LOT to cover the carbon emissions we’ll be making in our super-crappy-mileage-but-otherwise-nice minivan! And oh goodie, gas is nearly $94 a barrel, so we’ll be paying top dollar to do this bit of traveling with wee ones! Poor Rissa. Her hernia is lower on her abdomen rather than at the belly button. It is likely that she’ll need surgery sooner than 6 months, and pooping has become a difficult endeavor again. Here are pictures of us at Children’s. I am a fan of the blue Hot Sling I’m wearing in the picture! Rissa can take her nap and I could have held Zach or all our gear with my two free hands! Super convenient.

To make us all feel better about poor Rissa’s news, here are some more pictures. Rissa had a question for Matt, then both babies realized they were hungry and should be out of those swaddlers and getting some eats! Unfortunately, trying to extract onself from a swaddler is tricky and someone could get punched.

do you have a question? we’re hungry!

Both babies love to gaze at the quilt on the back of the feeding bench… it always captures their attention! This quilt was made by Becky Weidner! Here, Zach finds himself in the mirror. He watched himself reach up to his pacie, then back down again and was shocked that the other baby had a pacie too!

Here we are this morning at 5am all wishing we were still asleep, until Zach lit up the room with his smile! Rissa had a nice hug for Daddy, but no burps.

And finally, one of my favorite current pictures. I was reading the babies a story and noticed them holding hands. Aren’t they adorable?!!
